About Salair Nature Reserve

Salair Nature Reserve, established in 2001, is located within the Salair Ridge in Kemerovo Oblast of southwestern Siberia, Russia. It is a strictly protected area aimed at conserving the unique ecosystems of the ridge, which forms part of the vast West Siberian Plain foothills. The reserve’s landscape is characterized by gently rolling hills, mixed taiga forests dominated by Siberian pine, fir, spruce, and birch, along with river valleys and small wetlands. It offers a rare glimpse into Siberia's woodland ecosystems, serving as an important refuge for many plant and animal species, including endangered and rare boreal fauna. Notable wildlife includes the Siberian musk deer, Eurasian lynx, brown bear, and a variety of bird species such as the black stork and hazel grouse. The area has remained relatively undisturbed by industrial development, giving it considerable ecological value in landscape conservation and scientific research. Outdoor recreation within the reserve is limited and strictly regulated to minimize human impact; however, visitors can enjoy hiking, wildlife observation, and nature photography during the short summer season. The reserve’s remote location and rugged natural beauty appeal mostly to ecologists, researchers, and intrepid nature enthusiasts seeking solitude and an authentic Siberian wilderness experience. Key natural landmarks include the pristine forest expanses along the Salair Ridge and the various river systems running through the protected zone, which contribute to the area's biodiversity and ecological complexity.
